Concept

Our assignment was "Create a shelter". I decided to work on a narrow and claustrophobic livable space with basic amenities and little to no wiggling room. I wanted it to, while simultaneously being a safe and arguably cozy place to rest in, be a mirror of the oppressive situations that would lead a person to need to live in such a place to begin with.

Goals

I needed to create recognizable and useful props to furnish the shelter and make it seem "lived in". The architecture of the room is based on a silo type structure (cut open to allow us to look inside) and a rectangular entryway/ storage space. The main goal of the project was to create props that would either take up a lot of space and help characterize the scene, or be reusable in large quantity to fill up the shelves and boxes of the shelter.

Process

I started by listing off props that could make it into a shelter of this sort, and sorting them in different mutually exclusive groups: each of which had its own distinct vibe and atmosphere. I decided to go for a more pristine looking shelter, still full of provisions and clean.

Afterwards, I set off to make each of the necessary 3D models starting with the shelter room itself as well as the larger props that would contribute to defining its shape, and only after that started modeling the smaller "spammable" props. Once the modeling was done, I textured each prop individually before integrating them all into Unity.

The final steps of the project were to arrange and scale the props in such a way that the room would be both pleasant to look at and look like a real living space, and to set up lighting that would put an emphasis on the shelter's real light sources while also making every prop in the scene properly visible.
